Florence Pugh as the May Queen in Midsommar (2019) A24
April Roundup
May Day May Day! I don’t know about you, but May is one of my favourite months, a month where the heady heat of summer isn’t quite here, but May’s a cheeky preview of it. Everyone has a spring in their step in anticipation of the warmer, sunnier days.
But April was also pretty gorgeous, and certainly served us well on our tours! Thank you to everyone who attended the two sold out Hex and the City tours, and our Harlots and Strumpets and Tarts tour.
April was also all about the suffragettes. A sold out Easter weekend Votes for Women! walk was accompanied by three special events held at the Bow Street Museum of Crime and Justice. On the 6th and 19th April I did a family friendly performance as a suffragette with a singalong, and on the 11th I channelled radical suffragette Kitty Marion for SUFFRAGETTES AFTER DARK - a special evening of suffragette talks and workshops. Photo evidence below!
The latter event was so popular that it will be back on 23rd May. so if you missed out last month, you’ve another chance to see it. The evening features author Jennifer Godfrey, a rosette making workshop, suffragette propaganda and object handling and me… (oh, and a bar…!) Link below.

What’s on in May?
Beltane Belles
The 1st May, May Day, Beltane, whatever you want to call it, is traditionally about celebrating the coming of summer, the return of the light, fertility, and growth. So we’re kicking off the month with a Beltane Sinners, Saints and Saviours special on the 2nd.

This tour of the Roman origins and folklore surrounding Southwark’s Herstory lends itself perfectly to the fiery energies of Beltane. It even includes a cheeky fertility ritual! Join us for a fun, cheeky and informative walk through Southwark, ending at a cosy historical pub.
Harlots and Foundlings
We’ve got another Harlots, Strumpets and Tarts tour on the 10th May in association with the Foundling Museum. The Foundling Museum tells the story of the 18th century foundling hospital in Coram’s Fields, set up to care for abandoned babies or ‘foundlings’. Many of these children were those of sex workers, the women that you’ll meet on our tour. If you’re interested in the broader history of 18th century life for women, and the harsh realities of the sex trade, join us on this popular walk, which includes free entry to the museum with your ticket.

Hexy and you know it!
And finally, on the 16th we have our regular Hex and the City witches tour. Always a sell out, book quickly if you want to reserve your spot on this very theatrical tour full of witchy history and unexpected twists.

Rise Up Women, Again!
As mentioned above, the SUFFRAGETTES AFTER DARK event at the Bow Street Museum of Crime and Justice was so popular that it will be repeated on the 23rd May (more info at top of the page) But also don’t miss our epic Votes for Women! monthly tour, which will be on the 18th May this month. See our latest review below

That’s it for this month’s roundup. I hope we’ll see you on a tour, at an event, or just online and in our mailing list if you can’t make it this month but remain interested.
As always, thank you and welcome to all the new subscribvers and followers. The tribe is growing, we’ll soon be taking over the world (!)
