In the merry month of June…!

if you’ve seen the vampire film Sinners you’ll know the reference of the title - a line from the Irish folk song Rocky Road to Dublin. Coincidentally, I’ve just returned from Dublin’s fair city myself! (and no vampires were met fortunately)

But it is a merry month indeed, with tours aplenty in June. But first, May…

May Roundup

Well we had some beautiful sunny days in May didn’t we? And that served us well. Our Beltane Sinners, Saints and Saviours special was well attended with glorious sunshine to herald in the spring. Goddess Isis was definitely with us!

Then it was a Harlots, Strumpets and Tarts special with the Foundling Museum. Again, it went so well that we will be repeating it again in July and September. See here.  I’m so glad as the Foundling Museum is a place close to my heart and I would encourage anyone who has never been to pay a visit. It is very poignant and records the fate of London’s abandoned ‘foundling’ children. Below is a photo of my lovely gang from the tour in May!

Then we had our Witches monthly regular on the 16th (again blessed with good weather) followed by Votes for Women! - our militant walk through London’s suffragette campaign on the 18th.

June Events

This month it’s (slightly) more sedate with three public tours and a private Jailbirds tour for the WI. Here are the details and links to book the public events:

20th June -  Harlots, Strumpets and Tarts, Oh My!

*(get in quick, this one is selling fast!)

22nd June -  Votes for Women! Suffragettes in Bow Street, and Beyond!

27th June  - Hex and the City

Unusually for me, I have now got all the public tours for July and August also listed for sale on the website, so if you are planning a tour later in the summer, please do go ahead and book now!

Reading recommendaations

Before I close, I wanted to do something I rarely do and that’s actually recommend some good reading.  I’m often asked for reading recommendations from tour attendees and I’m also constantly looking for feminist reads that are not just historical/factual literature.  Recently I’ve come across some good’uns you can look up.

Dont Make Me Laugh, Julia Raeside

This is a darkly funny novel that explores predatory male behaviour in standup comedy, misogyny and power.

Men Who Hate Women, Laura Bates

I read this some time ago and recently re-read it. I would also recommend her book Everyday Sexism.

She has a new book out about sexism and AI that I really want to read so I wanted to refresh my knowledge. This is a really telling investigation of the terrifying world of misogynistic extremism.

And lastly, I’ve not read either of these yet but am planning to, as I recently went to a talk with the authors at the Conway Hall. Both books look really fascinating and the talk was an eye opener into the dark world of the ‘Manosphere’ and the true extent of online misogyny.

So that’s it for this month, I’ll be back as usual with a HERSTORY blog on another fascinating woman later in the month. I hope I see some of you on a tour or at an event soon. As always, please review us on Google if you feel inclined, and if you come to an event and take photos, please post on social media if you use it and tag us! These things are a lifeline for small businesses to survive!
