September stories and saunters

Happy early autumn! It’s SEPTEMBERRRRR people! Hope you all had a lovely summer, I definitely did! Here’s a quick recap of last month:

The Harlots accosted us twice in August (well they do like it hot and sweaty!) First on a private team bonding outing (can’t think of a better way to bond than with historic sex workers ;-) and then later in the month for our regular public tour. We also, as usual, polished our broom sticks and laced up our marching boots for Hex and the City and Votes for Women! Pictures and testimonials below as proof!

Harlots and Strumpets and Tarts, Oh My!

We’ve collaborated with the Foundling Museum before and we’re collaborating again! The history of the 18th Century babies surrendered to the Foundling Hospital and the history of sex work is inextricably and tragically linked. Learn more on this walk that includes entry fee to the museum. Click the picture above.

Sex and Dr Johnson!

Dr Johnson had a lot to say about the sex trade. And after all, he did live at its ‘peak’ and right in the centre of it all! Come to his house, enjoy a tipple and immerse yourself in that era, meet one of his courtesan ‘friends’ and learn about the 18th Century sex trade and its impact on London society. Totally Thames!

This month is the Totally Thames festival! A month long programme of arts and educational events celebrating the River Thames, the artery of our city! As part of it I am running my Southbank tour Sinners, Saints and Saviours on two dates. This walk brings to life the forgotten ladies of the Southbank and their hidden stories: the medieval brothel madams, the Roman Goddesses, the Victorian heroines and reformers. We might even encounter a ‘monster’ of folklore who dwelled beneath the Thames…this walk is spooky and funny, with lots of comedy and theatrical surprises. Click pic above.

Magic, Mystics and Martyrs!

Aaaand just to pre-empt Halloween - a reminder that we are launching a BRAND NEW tour this October. Magic, Mystics and Martyrs. This walk along the Thames path from the City to the Tower explores the ghosts of some lesser known lady mystics, witches, rebels and ‘working women’ of the City. It’s an hour long, and ends at the Hung, Drawn and Quartered pub. Until the end of this month there are early bird tickets on sale for only TEN POUNDS!! A bargain if ever I saw one! Not many of those left though - secure your ticket now! Click image above.

I shall be back as usual with a Herstory mid month and then next month is a biggie with spooky season upon us, so stay tuned for that!

Much love,

Herstorical Tours…x
